Welcome to the Tegaki Tuesday (手(て)書(が)きの火(か)曜(よう)日(び)) website!

Tegaki Tuesday is a weekly Japanese/English handwriting challenge that happens every, you guessed it, Tuesday. For each challenge, a short passage is selected, usually from the lyrics of a song. Then, it's your job to handwrite (either physically or on a graphics tablet) the challenge and submit it! New challenges are posted weekly on Tuesday at 11:59 PM PST.

Done with this week's challenge? You don't have to wait a whole week! Feel free to browse through our backlog hundreds of past challenges to write and submit if you want to get extra practice. Nothing interests you? Add it to the site yourself! Create a community challenge.

Looking for something quick while waiting for the next Tegaki Tuesday? We have a Kanji of the Day (KOTD) challenge! A random Jōyō kanji is picked every 24 hours at 12:00 AM PST. When you're done, feel free to go back and submit previous days. (Or even kanji that haven't been KOTD yet!)

How do I submit?

Submissions are currently only accepted through Discord on the #handwriting channels of the following participating servers:

In the #handwriting channel of a participating server, use the /submit slash command with an image attachment to submit. 字(じ)ちゃん (Ji-chan) will automatically upload your submission to the website for you! You can submit as many times as you want.

Want to use 字ちゃん's utility commands on your own server? Add 字ちゃん to your own server! Keep in mind that challenge interaction is limited to officially partnered servers.

Most commands have both prefix (e.g. -h submit) and slash command (e.g. /submit) variants.

  • submit <image> [challenge]
    Submit to the latest handwriting challenge, or a specific one by number, kanji, or slug.

    Using the prefix version, -h submit [challenge], you can also reply to a submission embed (to re-tag it), or to a message with an image (to add it), in addition to normal usage. This applies to -h submitkotd as well.

  • submitkotd <image> Submit to today's Kanji of the Day.

  • challenge View the latest handwriting challenge info.

  • suggest Suggest a song or poem for a future challenge. Opens a form, so it's available as a slash command only.

  • i <text> Get category information and links to Jisho for character(s), along with a stroke order diagram for single characters.

  • so <text> Get stroke order diagrams for character(s), maximum 4.

  • jinmeiyo Random Jinmeiyō kanji.

  • joyo Random Jōyō kanji.

  • kyoiku [grade|ALL] Random Kyōiku kanji.

  • jlpt [level|ALL] Random JLPT kanji.

  • hyogai [group|ALL] Random Hyōgai kanji.

  • help Show 字ちゃん's command help menu.
